- Black Englishis the form of English spoken by many blacks, especially as an urban dialect of the United States. The name (apart from a chance occurrence recorded in 1734), and the recognition of Black English as a distinctive and describable form of AmE, date from the time of the civil-rights movement in the 1960s. It has many distinct grammatical features (e.g. uninflected plurals and double negatives) and items of vocabulary, which are not imperfections but are characteristic of a creolized form of English.
